Inform Interiors had the recent pleasure of hosting the Fritz Hansen North America team as well as Master Upholsterer Hans Thure Mannerhagen from the factory in Denmark. Adrian Pollack presented a wonderful seminar about Arne Jacobsen's life and work for Fritz Hansen. This was followed by Hans finishing an Egg™ chair on site during the event. It was truly an eye opening experience to see the amount of craftsmanship that goes into each piece. Seeing the craft behind the design elevates the product and company. Arne Jacobsen: Celebrating an Icon

Inform Interiors, Seattle’s premier design resource showroom for 15 years is celebrating Arne Jacobsen and his dedication to crafting timeless design.  Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971), renowned architect and designer, is known for designing classics such as the Egg™, Swan™, Ant™ and Series 7™ chairs. 2015 marks the 60th Anniversary of the Series 7™ chair, designed by Arne Jacobsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in 1955. 

In celebration of the Series 7 chair 60th anniversary, Inform is hosting an evening event on March 10th from 5-8.  Inform Interiors invites you to an evening including; 

• Seminar: The work of Anre Jacobsen presented by Fritz Hansen's Adrian Pollack.  Seminar begins at 6 pm.
• Launch: The North West's first showing of Fritz Hansen's limited edition Anniversary Series 7™ chair.
• Workshop: Fritz Hansen's Master Upholsterer from Denmark, Hans Thure Mannerhagen, will be on site at Inform.  You will witness the craftsmanship that goes into each Fritz Hansen product.  Hans will hand sew one of our Danish modern classics, Arne Jacobsen's  Egg™ chair.

Fritz Hansen Limited Edition Egg chair

Designed by Arne Jacobsen, produced by Fritz Hansen.

The inspiration for this new Limited Edition Egg chair from Fritz Hansen comes from designer Arne Jacobsen's original color palatte for the iconic Royal SAS Hotel in Copenhagen. The unique material combination for this version consists of a deep indigo canvas fabric paired with a brown leather piped edge and burnished dark metal base. The leather piping is made up of 1200 hand-sewn stitches, highlighting the unique profile of the Egg chair. This exclusive edition is made up of 999 total pieces, each with a sewn in leather label indicating the edition number for the chair.

Organic and informal, this is a chair known for its timeless combination of sophistication, comfort and style. The Egg chair has a swivel feature, adjustable tilt and comes with an optional matching footstool. This Limited Edition version retails with footstool for $9,873.

Inform at the Nordic Heritage Museum with Docomomo WEWA

Inform Interiors was pleased to present remarks about Poul Kjaerholm at Docomomo WEWA's event at the Nordic Heritage Museum's Danish Modern: Design for Living exhibit.

A refreshingly interested and engaged audience had all sorts of questions and comments and most made a point of trying out the 3 Poul Kjaerholm chairs we brought in for the event, the PK25, PK22 and PK9 (left to right in the top image). Furniture is meant to be sat in after all! 

One attendee, retired architect Audrey Legh Van Horne found her way to our showroom the next day just for a promised private tour with Hillary. It was delight going through the many pieces that we have at Inform from the same era as Poul Kjaerholm's work. We toured works from Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Alvar Aalto, Gino Sarfatti, and Charles and Ray Eames. Inform is available as a resource for the design community. Fritz Hansen Preferred Dealer Day

Fritz Hansen hosted Inform in New York last week to introduce the Poul Kjaerholm Collection.  Inform is one of a few chosen North American dealers who will carry and present the Poul Kjaerholm (PK) collection.  We had an incredible day highlighted when PK's children, Thomas and Krestine Kjaerholm, spoke on a personal level about their parents, lending much insight and the warmth of family to the PK collection.

We learned that their mother Hanne was an architect with her own practice and she designed their family home (based on the Golden Rule), now lived in by Thomas, for which much of PK's furniture was designed to work in.  The furniture was designed to be low to make the rooms more beautiful and to feel loftier.  When I asked Krestine if there was any problem deciding who would take their family home, she replied 'oh no, I took the house in Spain!' - again designed by their mother.  Krestine's favourite piece is the PK 9 dining chair, or as they called it at home, "my mother's butt".   It seems Hanne's back side was the basis of the shape, she had to sit in the sand to assist Poul in getting the seat shape just right.  And no - their mothers butt wasn't that large.  The PK 24 is Thomas' favourite and it still resides in its original spot in the family home.  Thomas and Krestine knew they lived differently from their friends - their friends told them.  They also noticed they lacked the bric-a-brac present in other homes.  All home dinners were like a Japanese tea ceremony, they were made beautiful.

Poul Kjaerholm went to school under another great Dane, Hans Wegner and was much inspired by him.  He was obsessed of the detail and had a collection of sports items in which he admired the beauty of detail in the making of them.  He needed to see and feel that same beauty in his furniture.  He loved the way furniture aged, and designed his pieces to last at least a lifetime.  He eventually became a teacher himself, a very difficult teacher (in the best of ways)  He is known to have comment to a student on their work:  "Do you the know saying, it hurts in my eyes?"  PK also kept a collection of images from nature that inspired him, images from trees, birds - the shape of the PK 24 was inspired by the shape of a bird's wing.

Our day ended off at Aamanns Copenhagen Restaurant where we continued hearing stories and enjoyed delicious food served beautifully.  We were sure Poul and Hanne Kjaerholm would have approved.
